South Andros Island – Blair’s Lodge
Andros Island is known as the bonefish capitol of the world, and many experts say that the flat of South Andros are excellent. If you’re looking for a small lodge with owners who really know fly-fishing, Bair’s Lodge gets our vote for the best place to stay in this area. Bair’s Lodge on Little Creek is all about fly-fishing, and you can’t find a friendlier place in the Bahamas. Bair’s Lodge is situated between Deep Creek and Little Creek, neither more than a 5 minute boat ride from the house. These creeks open out into a broad area of inland flats with hundreds of small cays and connecting channels, covering over 120 square miles.
The flats in the area are vast and 5-7 lb. bonefish are common, and + 10 pounds under the right weather conditions. Bair’s Lodge is located on the East side of South Andros, in the Bahamas, but the lodge fish also the West of Andros. Permit can be seen on certain flats and there are Tarpon in the deeper channels and creeks on the west side. Most of these Tarpon weight between 30-60 pounds. Please keep in mind that Permit and Tarpon are not an every day occurrence. May - September is the best period to find these fish. The third greatest reef in the world can be found some miles offshore and offers excellent Barracuda, Jack, Mackerel and Snapper fishing.
The guides grew up on these waters. They know the tides, weather and can spot fish from astounding distances. They use custom built 17 foot Bonefisher flats boats with 55 hp outboards, and can get you to remote flats quickly.
