Pelican Bay Lodge
The north shore of Grand Bahama is a vast area of creeks, cays and flats creates a huge fishery of hundreds of miles. The bottom structure of the flats varies from both hard and soft sand or grass flats to harder light coral or marl flats, creeks or cays, all of which provide excellent feeding areas for Bonefish and Permit. Fishing is primarily from Maverick Mirage flats boats, but anglers are encouraged also to wade. The average size is 4 to 6 pounds and heavier fish are almost a daily encounter. A trophy size of 10 + pound Bonefish can be located at any time and anglers should be alert and ready to cast. Pelican Bay’s fly record Bonefish is a remarkable fish of 14.5 pounds.
Although Pelican Bay can be considered as a world class bonefish destination, there are several other great game fish like Permit and Tarpon arriving during spring and summer. Barracuda can be found almost daily. There is also the possibility of running into small schools of hard fighting Jack Crevalle that average 10 to 15 pounds. Pelican Bay encourages all anglers to bring at least two fly rods: a # 8 for Bonefish and a # 10 or 11 for other game fish. These flats hold a seasonal population of Permit and Tarpon. These fish arrive in the spring and stay on the flats until the fall. The clubs record for Permit on the fly is 38 pounds. The largest tarpon to date was estimated at 130 pounds.
A unique new fishing program here at Pelican Bay is our deep sea fly fishing excursions for yellowfin tuna, skip jack tuna, blackfin tuna and dorado. Schools of yellowfin tuna move into local waters in April and can be found offshore from Grand Bahama until September. Yellowfin tuna average 15- to 25- pounds and have been landed up to 60- pounds. Most of offshore fishing is done with floating fly lines. An appealing part of the fishing offshore that it turns on early morning to late afternoon and early evening. This allows our anglers to fish a full day on the flats and also have the option to experience the action offshore. Alternatively this type of trip is a great option for arrival and departure days. All fly fishing equipment is included in our offshore program. Pelican Bay provide all the specialty fly rods, reels, leaders and flies for these trips included in this package
